For the past several months we’ve been experiencing fantastic growth and quickly running out of usable workspace. Today marks an exciting milestone for Open Solutions Group, Inc. as we’ve found our new permanent residence here on the West Coast.

Over the weekend we packed up our bags and moved to La Jolla, pronounced as ‘lə-hoy-ə’, for those outside the Southern California region. La Jolla is known for it’s high ocean bluffs and sandy beaches, University of California San Diego, Scripps Oceanography Institute, and the home of many biotech and financial firms. We are inspired to introduce a new theme of technology to the region focused around Cloud Computing, Telecommunications, and Geospatial.

This new facility will serve as our San Diego Regional Headquarters and Data Center, with our team of Software Engineers, Technologists, and Executives collaborating in an open and creative environment who are challenged to build innovative and compelling products for our customers. We have room for growth here, and we have found exactly what we’ve been missing in our prior working environments. The suite was designed with an open floor plan with plenty of workspace and natural lighting, a large conference room for hosted meetings and seminars, private offices, and a dedicated walk-in freezer (server and data room).

We are all really excited about our new home here on the West Coast. It’s shaping up to be a great workplace and our team is already planning out the extra-curricular activities for when we are not coding away (karaoke, movie nights, hiking, and surfing). We are pleased to be a few steps closer to our sandy beaches and newfound favorite eatery “Five Guys”.

We’re also looking for really good people to join our expanding teams here in San Diego and Washington DC. If your looking for a great place to work, on the west or east coast, please look us up and visit www.opensgi.com/careers.

Please drop by and pay us a visit!

July 17-18, 2010 San Diego, CA – Open Solutions Group is a proud gold sponsor and coordinator of the inaugural WhereCamp SoCal Summer 2010, scheduled for July 17 and 18 in San Diego at the Adams Humanities building on the San Diego State University (SDSU) Campus.

Commencing on the heels of the 2010 ESRI International Users Conference, key notes will be delivered by Dr. Eric G. Frost, Associate Professor of SDSU, and Mr. Todd Huffman. OpenSGI, GeoCommons, SimpleGeo, ESRI, and Urban Mapping have planned several workshops revolving around various geospatial topics.

“WhereCamp is a community led grassroots conference for Geo enthusiasts, developers, artists, theorists. WhereCamp (like other BarCamps) is built on the ideas originally put forth by FooCamp, except that attendance is open to anyone. It is an un-conference where the attendees drive the content of the sessions the day of instead of having a prescribed schedule and set of content.

The goal of WhereCamp is to simply encourage social cross pollination of ideas between developers, makers, artists. By being totally free to participants it can attract voices who otherwise simply cannot afford to speak. It is a complement to Where 2.0 in that it provides the kind of time to really dwell on and examine a topic. The hope is that WhereCamp helps spark new work and foster new projects in the geo space. The measurable outcome is when people say they started new collaborations based on WhereCamp.”

For more information on WhereCamp SoCal please visit www.wherecampsocal.com. Admittance is free, but attendees should pre-register at http://wherecampsocal.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtn

an integrated platform for OpenSGI’s Enterprise GeoCache Appliance to the US Department of Defense. United brings over 20 years of design and engineering experience in custom hardware chassis and components supporting tactical and strategic solutions for federal, state and local governments, and the intelligence community.

Geospatial and imagery systems historically had to address the bottleneck problem – too much data to be accessed and delivered via hardware and software. The combination of OpenSGI’s Enterprise GeoCache software and United’s line of high performance hardware servers and workstations will provide the ground breaking technology for geospatial visualization using large data repositories. As successfully demonstrated at the recent 2010 DoDIIS Worldwide Conference, the Enterprise GeoCache provides a portable solution for geospatial data delivery that delivers the highest resolution data and imagery in seconds. The Enterprise GeoCache includes 40 terabytes of worldwide geospatial data, pre-processed for high speed delivery of maps over the web. The global dataset consists of NGA holdings and custom products such as commercial satellite, scanned maps, vector data sets, elevation and analytical models, and Open Street Map.

Randy Nagel, President of United, stated “Addressing the bottleneck problem both from the hardware and software angle proved to be an optimal solution. It enables us to secure very fast response times using massive amounts of data”. Shipping with over 40TB of geospatial data, the Enterprise GeoCache delivers cartographic maps and satellite imagery to the user in a fraction of a second. Frank Porcelli, Vice President and COO of OpenSGI, agrees, “We recognized the growing demand of organizations that need a high performing compliment to their geospatial infrastructure. The Enterprise GeoCache fills that void, all while maximizing delivery speed and productivity”. The Enterprise GeoCache natively supports a variety of GIS products including ESRI ArcGIS, Google Earth, and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards.

VIENNA, VIRGINIA, February 19, 2010 – Geospatial Mapping and data was brought to the forefront during the aftermath of the recent Haitian earthquake and demonstrated what large and small projects, agencies and businesses can accomplish quickly when working together towards a common goal.

Volunteers from the Crisis Mapping Community, which uses geographic datasets for disaster relief and analysis, came together to create maps and other necessary tools for relief workers in Haiti. Due to the incredible amount of damage done to the Haitian infrastructure, updated imagery and maps were absolutely essential to provide relief agencies and workers with an operational picture from which to work in order to provide services to the Haitian people.

OpenSGI proudly supported SOUTHCOM and the Department of Defense in the development of an application designed to aid medical personnel in the allocation and distribution of resources and supplies; contributed to the development of a Medical Messaging System which will enable medical professionals to transmit their status and requests via phone, SMS and email; and provided mapping services via the All Partners Access Network (APAN) that enables relief workers and agencies to share a common geospatial operational picture.

Brian Levy, President and CEO of OpenSGI said, “Along with everyone else, I was saddened by the disaster in Haiti. I’m pleased that our company was in a position to help provide assistance to the many relief workers from around the world that are participating in this recovery effort. We extended our support to the tragedy of 9/11 and the World Trade Center, our neighbors in Haiti deserve that same attention.”

Open Solutions Group, Inc., with locations in Northern Virginia and Southern California, is a small, minority-owned business specializing in Geospatial Information Systems with clients in both the private and government sectors.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, January 8, 2010 – Open Solutions Group, Inc (OpenSGI) and GeoDecisions recently completed the first phase of the San Diego Regional Emergency Geospatial Information Network (SDREGIN) project with a pilot presentation. The goal of SDREGIN is to provide a secure and interoperable spatial data architecture supporting the San Diego metropolitan region’s diverse emergency services and public safety agencies.

The presentation illustrated how the use of the SDREGIN architecture, data modeling, and information sharing capabilities can enable agencies to fuse disparate data into information with regional coverage, enhancing situational awareness beyond an immediate area of responsibility. SDREGIN information can be accessed through existing tools, applications, and hardware without needing to purchase special software or applications. Emergency professionals across the region can visualize working with the same data, providing a single, uniform source of information to utilize for emergency planning, response, and recovery, while also increasing interagency communication across desktop, web, and mobile platforms.

To facilitate the demonstration of this concept, OpenSGI developed Android mobile and thin-client web applications that allow users to visualize and work with San Diego regional geospatial data. These tools provide a conceptual model for enhancing the communication and collaboration between dispatchers and field-based emergency responders in a spatial context.

An ESRI Flex application was developed by GeoDecisions to provide a demonstration of an advanced, feature rich Common Operating Picture. This application provides access to the SDREGIN pilot geodatabase, as well as, advanced spatial querying, video display, and reporting tools. The application includes a set of tools for creating and sharing user annotations in real time.

All of the applications capitalize on an automated Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) Service prototype. This service consumes and publishes geospatial data provided by different organizations within SDREGIN to a shared data model, and provides access to the geospatial data layers through interoperable OGC services.
