VIENNA, VIRGINIA, February 19, 2010 - Geospatial Mapping and data was brought to the forefront during the aftermath of the recent Haitian earthquake and demonstrated what large and small projects, agencies and businesses can accomplish quickly when working together towards a common goal.

Volunteers from the Crisis Mapping Community, which uses geographic datasets for disaster relief and analysis, came together to create maps and other necessary tools for relief workers in Haiti. Due to the incredible amount of damage done to the Haitian infrastructure, updated imagery and maps were absolutely essential to provide relief agencies and workers with an operational picture from which to work in order to provide services to the Haitian people.

OpenSGI proudly supported SOUTHCOM and the Department of Defense in the development of an application designed to aid medical personnel in the allocation and distribution of resources and supplies; contributed to the development of a Medical Messaging System which will enable medical professionals to transmit their status and requests via phone, SMS and email; and provided mapping services via the All Partners Access Network (APAN) that enables relief workers and agencies to share a common geospatial operational picture.

Brian Levy, President and CEO of OpenSGI said, “Along with everyone else, I was saddened by the disaster in Haiti. I’m pleased that our company was in a position to help provide assistance to the many relief workers from around the world that are participating in this recovery effort. We extended our support to the tragedy of 9/11 and the World Trade Center, our neighbors in Haiti deserve that same attention.”

Open Solutions Group, Inc., with locations in Northern Virginia and Southern California, is a small, minority-owned business specializing in Geospatial Information Systems with clients in both the private and government sectors.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, January 8, 2010 - Open Solutions Group, Inc (OpenSGI) and GeoDecisions recently completed the first phase of the San Diego Regional Emergency Geospatial Information Network (SDREGIN) project with a pilot presentation. The goal of SDREGIN is to provide a secure and interoperable spatial data architecture supporting the San Diego metropolitan region’s diverse emergency services and public safety agencies.

The presentation illustrated how the use of the SDREGIN architecture, data modeling, and information sharing capabilities can enable agencies to fuse disparate data into information with regional coverage, enhancing situational awareness beyond an immediate area of responsibility. SDREGIN information can be accessed through existing tools, applications, and hardware without needing to purchase special software or applications. Emergency professionals across the region can visualize working with the same data, providing a single, uniform source of information to utilize for emergency planning, response, and recovery, while also increasing interagency communication across desktop, web, and mobile platforms.

To facilitate the demonstration of this concept, OpenSGI developed Android mobile and thin-client web applications that allow users to visualize and work with San Diego regional geospatial data. These tools provide a conceptual model for enhancing the communication and collaboration between dispatchers and field-based emergency responders in a spatial context.

An ESRI Flex application was developed by GeoDecisions to provide a demonstration of an advanced, feature rich Common Operating Picture. This application provides access to the SDREGIN pilot geodatabase, as well as, advanced spatial querying, video display, and reporting tools. The application includes a set of tools for creating and sharing user annotations in real time.

All of the applications capitalize on an automated Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) Service prototype. This service consumes and publishes geospatial data provided by different organizations within SDREGIN to a shared data model, and provides access to the geospatial data layers through interoperable OGC services.

One of the most challenging areas of geospatial visualization is the delivery of fast maps. Geospatial data visualization can be the most bandwidth intensive transaction that occurs on the network. Systems compete with each other to view the most up to date high resolution imagery and the database is sending new data requests constantly.

Networks are limited in the available bandwidth for delivery of such products quickly. OpenSGI specializes in providing lightning fast maps without the requirement of constantly re-querying the geospatial database. Our enterprise solution provides a portable locally stored repository that is built with scalability in mind and allows our applications to deliver the highest resolution maps and imagery in a fraction of the time that it takes our competitors.

MetaCarta and Open Solutions Group provide Geographic Search and Visualization for the Department of Defense

MetaCarta and Open Solutions Group have recently integrated map-based search of unstructured documents with emerging geospatial visualization capabilities for the Department of Defense.

Among these capabilities is the addition of text search into the open-source Completely Open Mapping Environment (COMET), a next-generation geospatial intelligence and visualization tool which provides support for open geospatial standards through a pluggable thin client and extensible API framework. In order to display map markers associated with unstructured documents, COMET uses web services provided by MetaCarta’s Geographic Search and Referencing Platform (GSRP). With full support for MetaCarta GSRP, COMET helps users such as analysts and operators find everything written about any place – simply by zooming into an area of interest.

The MetaCarta user interface components of COMET ‘s web-based geospatial environment allow users to enter keywords, date ranges, and geographic feature types (such as building or tunnel) to rapidly explore the massive volumes of content that refer to places, including published digital documents, military message traffic, bulletins, file shares, databases and artifacts from other content management systems.

Deployments of COMET can access both private MetaCarta systems and also hosted collections of public content, such as MetaCarta’s GeoSearch News. COMET is a powerful addition to the arsenal of tools using MetaCarta’s web services. The MetaCarta – OpenSGI solution demonstrates a collaborative approach to providing enhanced knowledge discovery and visualization of geospatial intelligence.

MetaCarta Inc. is the leading provider of geographic intelligence solutions. MetaCarta’s unique technology combines search and geo-tagging to radically improve search recall for geographically focused industries. MetaCarta’s natural language geo-tagging leverages the deep data sets of spatial and linguistic information that are part of the MetaCarta platform. In addition to intelligence analysis, the MetaCarta platform is used in Oil & Gas companies and also in Digital Media organizations.

MetaCarta Geographic Search and Referencing Platform (GSRP) automatically georeferences unstructured text so it can be used in location-based applications. MetaCarta GSRP offers six core Information Retrieval functions which include GeoSearch, GeoTag, Query Parser, Location Finder, Saved Search and Notification, and Document Density.

For more information on the MetaCarta Geographic Search and Referencing Platform (GSRP), please contact Ken Tomaselli (ken.tomaselli@metacarta.com) or visit MetaCarta online at www.metacarta.com.

The objective of SDREGIN is to provide a secure spatial data architecture supporting the San Diego Metropolitan region’s diverse emergency response and public safety agencies. As an integral part of the project team, OpenSGI will complete a strategic plan, enterprise spatial data model, establish cross agency spatial data integration strategies, and develop an enterprise data integration pilot project. When complete, coordinating agencies will be able to share information pertaining to critical infrastructure and resources in support of emergency management operations. SDREGIN will provide first responders with improved communications and spatial data interoperability technologies allowing them to increase response times and improve real time emergency response decision making.
